Important reminders
  • Students should not line up at classroom doors or in the hallway to wait to be dismissed.
  • Please do not prop exterior doors open. This is a significant security breach.
  • Please remember our instructional focus.
    • You should include some sort of closure activity at the end of each class.
    • You should have something in place (formative assessment) during each class that provides you with evidence of student learning so that you can provide instruction that is responsive to student needs. Remember the following questions:
      • How do you know what students learned by the end of class?
      • If you do know, then how do you plan to use that information to guide your instruction tomorrow?
      • If you don't know, then how do you know if you what you have planned tomorrow is what your students need?
Disaggregated MAP Data
I have received our disaggregated MAP scores from Central Office. I had a data meeting today with Central Office administrators. Hixson administration will analyze the data and decide how to disseminate it to staff. There are many things to celebrate, but there are also some things that need to be addressed immediately. Once our admin team has prepared a plan for facilitating these conversations, we will begin sharing this information with you.

Hixson Parent University
In an effort to increase parent engagement at Hixson, I am working with Hixson PTO to pilot an idea called Hixson Parent University (HPU) this year. The goal for the pilot is to offer four webinars this school year that will educate parents about topics that are highly relevant to the middle school child. We will have two webinars in the fall and two in the spring. The first fall webinar will focus on cell phones, social media and the adolescent child. The second fall webinar will occur during the November 17 during the PTO meeting, and it will focus on mental health and the middle school child. This webinar will be facilitated by Hixson counselors.

I am currently seeking panelists for the March 9, 2023 HPU webinar! The goal of the panel will be to give parents an opportunity to hear from middle school teachers about middle school curriculum, effective instructional practices, and how they can support their student's academic needs at home. Rising 6th grade parents will be invited to the March HPU so they have this information ahead of their students' transition to middle school.

Dr. Mayes will be the guest speaker for the April 27, 2023 HPU. In an effort to educate parents about the purpose of middle school, she will teach parents about the middle school model and explain why we are structured the way that we are. Rising 6th grade parents will be invited to the March HPU so they have this information ahead of their students' transition to middle school.

HPU occurs during PTO meetings.

Hixson Middle School has been awarded Sprout level recognition AGAIN by Missouri Green Schools (MGS) for taking steps towards making an impactful difference in the lives of our students, staff, and surrounding communities. MGS announced the honorees on their website and in their social media. Possible Service Project for your Statesman Time
Engaging students in service learning is a meaningful way to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate our core values of respect, positive relationships, and teamwork. Please read the opportunity below and let me know if your Statesman Time would like to participate. This would be an awesome Veteran's Day activity!

Write letters to veterans who participate in the Greater St Louis Honor Flight.

Message from PTO
This year, your PTO is working hard to create a sense of community. A big part of that is introducing ALL of you to our families in the "Getting to Know You" series. If you are interested, please take a moment to answer some of the questions on the Google form (below) so that Kelly Dunsford can write a profile about you and post it on the Hixson PTO Facebook page. You do not need to answer every question. These posts are loved by our families, and many parents have commented about wanting to see more! Thanks again for your time and work with our Junior Statesmen!
