Protocol for reporting COVID related absences
If you are experiencing COVID-like symptoms and therefore need to get tested, please send an email to Shenita Mayes and Human Resources (hrc@wgmail.org) explaining your situation, and enter the absence in Aesop as soon as possible. This same process applies if you need to care for a child or family member who has COVID or needs to get tested for COVID. I am trying to keep very close tabs on the progression of COVID in the building, and I need your prompt communication in order to do that.

Generally speaking, the sooner you enter an absence into Aesop, the better, regardless of the reason.

Essential information for when you have a substitute
Adding substitute accounts to a teacher's course

From Tim Brown--"If you need a substitute to open Zoom for students who are not present at school, then you will need to add the substitute account as a co-host to your Zoom session." Sarah Magruder will tell you which sub account to add. Tim Brown has created more sub accounts for us. Our sub accounts are listed below, along with the password, which is the same for each account.

Who is permitted to access live instruction via Zoom?
Here is the explanation for who is permitted to access live virtual instruction, and how you can respond to parents if they are choosing to keep their student home out of extra precaution, but NOT due to official quarantine or isolation.

I completely understand you choosing to have (child's name) stay home due to the rapid increase in COVID cases. It continues to be a challenging time for us all. (child's name) can access his/her/their assignments through my Canvas pages while he/she/they are absent. His/her/their attendance will be marked with a U (unexcused absence) for all class periods each day until he/she/they returns to school.

According to district policy that follows Missouri's Department of Education guidelines, students may only access live virtual instruction if they are quarantined (suspected COVID, close contact, awaiting test results) or isolated (positive for COVID). If either situation applies to your child, please contact our Nurse, Amy Hensley, to report the information. She will advise you on next steps and provide us/teachers with confirmation of your student's quarantine or isolation, if applicable.

I hope (child's name) and your family continue to stay safe and healthy.  Please reach out with any further questions.

Attendance update
If you are covering class for another teacher, please communicate absences to Sarah Magruder of Cynthia Delaney while Nikita Hicks is absent. They are working on attendance together and have almost cleared all of Nikita's voicemails.

Statesman Time - PE rotation & WIN Time
WIN Time will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We are working to finalize the PE rotation with the PE department and will share it ASAP. For obvious reasons, we are behind schedule in getting this finalized. :-)

Summer School
Please let me know if you are interested in teaching summer school this year. Jessica Greenberg and Alka Woodard will be our summer school admin interns this year, and we are considering a STEAM focus for our summer programming. Summer school will take place at Hixson Middle School, and it will run from June 6 to July 1, 2022. The hours will be 8:30 am to 12:45 pm. The rate of pay is $29 per hour. Retirement is deducted if certified summer school staff work more than 17 hours per week. Retirement is deducted if summer school support staff pay work more than 20 hours per week. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Would you like to pilot something?
Are you interested in piloting a new and innovative idea in your classroom/in your work with students next school year? The Hixson administrative team is interested in hearing ideas from individuals and/or groups of staff members who are interested in trying something new next year. A school cannot move forward if it doesn't find time to try something new. Here are some examples of ideas to pilot.

  • An individual or group of staff members decide(s) to pilot restorative practices, project based learning, experiential learning, or service learning next year.
Please email Shenita Mayes if you have an idea that you'd like to discuss!

District Flyers

The Chelsea Center presents Show, Do, & Tell!
Join the Chelsea Center to create the first ever district wide Show, Do & Tell event.  This event will showcase students of all ages engaged in learning by doing.

Why should we participate? Show, Do & Tell provides opportunities for students to curate and then share their learning with an authentic audience, which are powerful components of Experiential Learning. Students who participate will also make connections with each other, across grade levels, buildings and content areas, potentially expanding their vision of learning to include multiple pathways for Experiential Learning through WGSD. The event will help families, community members, and students better understand and celebrate the many benefits of experiential learning.

Who should participate?Teachers and a select handful of students from your classroom who can show, do & tell about the power of Experiential Learning.

What does participation look like?Show, Do & Tell will showcase students of all ages who are engaged in learning by doing. Teachers and their students may bring something, do something, or engage the audience in doing something to demonstrate their experiential learning.  Tables will be set up for groups in the WGHS cafeteria.  Families and community members will be invited to explore and engage with students and teachers at their tables.  If you are in need of other supplies, please contact Kerry Arens (arens.kerry@wgmail.org) or Jenny Willenborg (willenborg.jennifer@wgmail.org).

Where & when will the event take place?March 3, 2022 from 6-8pm at WGHS.  Dinner for all students and staff involved in the showcase will be provided.

How do we get involved?

If you are interested in participating, here is a link to a Google formto sign up. We will follow up with a phone call or email to discuss further details.

Questions? Contact Kerry Arens (arens.kerry@wgmail.org) or Jenny Willenborg (willenborg.jennifer@wgmail.org)
